Mechanical Behaviour of Compositionally Graded Martensitic Steels

Unique combinations of strength and ductility can be obtained through the use of compositionally graded materials. In this work, a series of carburizing and decarburizing steps is utilized to produce carbon concentration gradients within 4340M. In the simplest case, a combination of a low carbon concentration at the surface and high carbon content at the core is obtained. This microstructure combines good formability and strength due to the soft surface layer and hard core. The interface between the soft and hard layers is very diffuse and does not contribute to the failure. Results on tensile and bending tests will be presenting showing the superior qualities of the graded material.
